The four football matches scheduled for Monday in Italy’s top division have been postponed due to the passing of Pope Francis.
On Monday morning, the Vatican confirmed that Pope Francis had passed away at the age of 88 after recently being released from the hospital, where he received treatment for an infection for five weeks.
The Serie A matches – Torino against Udinese, Cagliari facing Fiorentina, Genoa playing against Lazio, and Parma versus Juventus – were initially set to take place on Easter Monday, a national holiday in Italy. These matches will now take place on Wednesday, April 23, starting at 17:30 BST.
Pope Francis was elected as the head of the Catholic Church in 2013, succeeding Pope Benedict XVI.
The 88-year-old was noted for his passion for football and had been a lifelong supporter of Argentine club San Lorenzo.
Several Serie A clubs expressed their condolences to the Pope after his death.
“A sorrowful loss for our city and the entire globe,” a statement from Roma stated.
