At least seven people were killed in an Israeli airstrike on Al-Wafa Hospital in central Gaza City on Sunday, the Civil Defence Service reported.
Spokesman Mahmoud Basal stated that the upper floor of the hospital, sheltering displaced civilians, was struck during the attack. Several others sustained injuries in the bombing.
Eyewitnesses reported that an Israeli fighter jet targeted the building’s upper floor, further exacerbating the dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The airstrike is part of an ongoing Israeli military campaign against Gaza, which intensified after the cross-border incursion by Hamas on October 7, 2023. Despite a United Nations Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire, hostilities have persisted.
The protracted conflict has led to growing international condemnation, with organisations and world leaders labelling the offensive as an attempt to render Gaza uninhabitable.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) recently issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Additionally, Israel faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice over its military actions in the region.
