Cyclone Hidaya has caused damage and more flooding across Tanzania over the weekend.
The damage caused a blackout in most parts of the country on Saturday, May 4, 2024. So far the cyclone has left over 150 people dead.
All efforts to rescue those affected was to no avail as Ferry services between Tanzania’s commercial hub, Dar es Salaam, and Zanzibar were suspended because of the havoc caused by the cyclone which approached the coast.
Kenya Meteorological Department on X formerly Twitter said, the current observations indicate that Tropical Cyclone Hidaya has made landfall on the coast of Tanzania. However, there is another depression developing behind it, which the Department is monitoring closely.
According to the weather service, there was high amount of rainfall than usual overnight on Friday and weather forecasts indicated the flooding across the region would worsen.
So far, over 200,000 people and businesses have been affected
Cyclone Hidaya is reportedly the strongest tropical cyclone ever recorded in the history of Tanzania.
