Six men are being held by South African police over the murder of Kaizer Chiefs defender Luke Fleurs.
The 24-year-old centre-back was shot dead during a car-jacking incident at a Johannesburg gas station on April 3.
Authorities say the six suspects were apprehended in Soweto on Wednesday morning. Police believe they are part of a syndicate that operates in the Gautheng province and are still on the lookout for more suspects.
Fleurs was in line to be attended to at the fuel station when he was accosted by two gunmen, who ordered him out of his vehicle. One of the suspects fired a lone shot on the footballer, while his car was taken away.
The police have since recovered his already stripped vehicle.
The former Under-23 international joined Kaizer Chiefs after a spell with SuperSport United. His club has described his death as “tragic”.
The suspects are expected to be arraigned on Friday.
