The Mali Army said it has regained control of three Military bases in central Mali after militants attacked them all at the same time.

According to a statement released by the Army late on Sunday, six troops were killed during the incident at the military bases.

In neighboring Burkina Faso, there was also an attack. These four attacks highlight the Sahel region’s military forces’ vulnerability.

As suicide bombers were driving cars packed with explosives into army bases in Mali’s Mopti region, another militants group was killing soldiers and civilians across the border in the north of Burkina Faso.

In both countries, soldiers seized power after accusing the elected governments of failing to deal with the militants threat.

The man now in charge of Burkina Faso, Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henri Damiba, recently announced the setting up of local committees that are to try holding talks with the militants.

Mali, one of the world’s poorest countries, has been wracked by a decade-long terrorist insurgency that has claimed thousands of lives and displaced hundreds of thousands.

The failure of elected president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita to rein in the insurgency sparked public outrage, which led to a military takeover in August 2020.
