Slain Black Lawyers Association Chair Memorial Holds in South Africa

North West Black Lawyers Association Chairperson Shot Dead Outside Office

A Memorial Service was held on Thursday for Zanele Precious Nkosi, the chairperson of the North West Black Lawyers Association in South Africa. Nkosi was shot dead by two unknown gunmen last week outside her office in Rustenburg.

The memorial service was held at the Rustenburg Civic Centre City Hall with the event well attended by members of the legal community, as well as friends and family of the deceased. As the search for the killers continues, the nation mourns the loss of a respected and dedicated legal professional, and calls for justice to be served.

Nkosi was a committed and active member of the organised legal profession, having served on numerous committees of the Law Society of South Africa (LSSA). She was an admitted attorney for over nine years, and specialised in civil litigation in both lower and high courts, primarily in municipal law, and had significant experience in criminal litigation.

The death of Nkosi has sent shockwaves through the legal community in South Africa, with many calling for action to be taken to address the rising levels of violence and crime in the country. Eunice Masipa, the President of the Law Society of South Africa (LSSA), has described Nkosi as “a fearless woman of strength” who was committed to making South Africa a better place for all.

Masipa called on the authorities to do everything in their power to find the killers and bring them to justice, stating that “this cowardly act has robbed Ms Nkosi’s family, colleagues, and the country of a fearless woman of strength.” The LSSA has expressed its condolences to Nkosi’s family and friends and has vowed to continue to work towards a safer and more just society in South Africa.
