Reports from Slovakia say the Prime Minister, Robert Fico, has been shot after a cabinet meeting outside the capital, Bratislava. He has been taken to hospital
Police are said to have detained a suspect after the incident.
According to local media, the incident happened in the town of Handlova, almost 200 kilometres northeast of the Slovakian capital.
Fico was leaving a government meeting when several shots were fired from a crowd. An eyewitness said he had fallen to the ground and was then loaded into a vehicle and taken away.
He was then airlifted to a nearby hospital to receive treatment. There is still no news about his condition.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico returned to power after having been forced to resign after the murder of journalist Jan Kuciak in 2018.
Leading the populist left-wing Smer-SSD party, he won the vote last October with promises to cease military aid to Ukraine, although he has denied being pro-Russian.
