Sokoto Assembly Considers Power-Stripping Bill for Sultan Despite Denials

Despite repeated denials from the Sokoto State government regarding moves to relegate the Sultan of Sokoto, the Sokoto State House of Assembly has passed the Sokoto Emirate Council Amendment Bill for its first and second readings.

This bill seeks to reduce the Sultan’s powers, including the authority to appoint kingmakers and district heads without government approval.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed concerns over the growing trend of state governments interfering with traditional enthronement processes.

In a statement issued on his X handle, he emphasised the importance of protecting traditional institutions from government arbitrariness to ensure stability, peace, security, and economic development.

Atiku noted that, although traditional institutions are not recognised in the current Constitution, they have historically played a significant role in governance. He advocated for constitutional reform to clearly define the responsibilities of traditional institutions and offices, especially to address local security challenges. He also urged state governors to respect these institutions as they represent the cultural heritage of the people.

Recently, the Kano State governor activated a law enabling the dethronement of the Emir of Kano, Ado Bayero, and the reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi II, who had previously been removed. Rumours suggest that the Sokoto State governor may be scheming to remove the Sultan of Sokoto from his throne.

“Recent developments in the country have seen a growing tendency of state governments exerting influence in distorting the modalities of enthroning traditional stools,” Atiku said.

“While it is understandable that the institutions of traditional rulership are in the exclusive purview of the state government, although through the local government authorities, it must be established that traditional institutions constitute a component of our governance structure. And thus, traditional institutions must be protected from the arbitrariness of state governments that threaten their stability.”

“When the structure of ascension of traditional rulers is unstable, it will become equally difficult to maintain peace and orderliness in communities.”
