Nineteen traditional rulers, including district and ward heads in the Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State, have resigned, publicly pledging their support for Senator Ibrahim Lamido.
The resignations include key ward heads from areas such as Sabon Birnin Gabas, Tsilba, Sabon Garin Danbaki, and Magajin Dawakin, among others.
This wave of resignations follows the recent departure of the District Head of Sabon Birni, Alhaji Abdullahi Muhammad Bawa, who stepped down on October 16, 2024, to support Lamido.
In his resignation letter, Bawa expressed his commitment to the political vision of Senator Lamido, stating, “I resigned my position to join the political wagon of Senator Ibrahim Lamido.” Bawa had served Sabon Birni since his appointment in 2014.
The ward head of Taka-Tsaba, Alhaji Lauwali Shuaibu, spoke to reporters, explaining that their collective decision was driven by Senator Lamido’s consistent support for their communities, especially during bandit attacks. “Sen. Lamido has always been there for us in times of crisis, and our support will encourage him to continue the good work he’s been doing,” Shuaibu stated.
Alhaji Jamilu Gwanda Gobir, the former Ubandoma of Sarkin Gobir, also echoed this sentiment, saying their resignations aim to revitalise the Gobir district and attract leaders committed to constituents’ well-being.
With their positions now vacant, the resigning traditional rulers are focused on backing political leaders who prioritize the safety and welfare of their communities.
