The Sokoto State Government has vehemently denied allegations made by the Muslims Rights Concern (MURIC) suggesting plans to dethrone Sultan Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar. In a strongly worded response, the state government condemned the accusations as baseless and designed to sow discord among citizens.
“We are appalled by the irresponsible claims made by MURIC,” stated Abubakar Bawa, Press Secretary to the Sokoto state Governor. “Accusing us of planning to depose our revered Sultan is not just false but malicious. It is disappointing that MURIC would align itself with mischief makers to spread such unfounded stories.”
The government further emphasised its unwavering respect for the Sultanate Council, a cornerstone of Sokoto’s heritage. “The Sultanate Council holds immense historical and cultural significance for all of Sokoto State,” Bawa continued. “We have always upheld and valued this institution, which predates even the existence of MURIC.”
Addressing recent administrative decisions regarding district heads, the government clarified that these actions were based on findings of misconduct and were not targeted at undermining Islamic affairs or the Sultan’s authority. “The removal of certain district heads was due to serious allegations including involvement in land fraud and failure to uphold security,” Bawa explained. “These decisions were made transparently following due process and in the best interest of the public.”
Highlighting ongoing constructive engagement with the Sultan, the government affirmed its commitment to consulting him on matters affecting the state. “We cherish the Sultan’s counsel and contributions,” Bawa affirmed. “Our administration remains steadfast in its respect for the Sultanate Council and its role in our governance.”
Bawa reiterated the government’s dedication to promoting Islamic affairs and enhancing the welfare of Sokoto’s Muslim-majority population. “No administration has done more for Islam in Sokoto State than ours,” he stated unequivocally. “Accusations suggesting otherwise are not just unfounded but undermine the progress we are making.”
The Sokoto State Government urged MURIC and the public to disregard the false claims and reiterated its commitment to fostering peace and development in the state.
