The Sokoto State Government, in Nigeria’s north-western region, has reaffirmed its dedication to collaborating with the judiciary to uphold the rule of law within the state.
Muhammad Nasir Binji, the State Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, made this declaration while inaugurating the 2024 Law Week under the theme “Professionalism and Nation Building” in Sokoto State.
Binji highlighted Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s efforts to realise this commitment by fostering a conducive environment between the Executive and the Legislature.
He emphasised that Governor Aliyu’s administration is actively enhancing the welfare of law officers by providing them with essential resources and a conducive working environment.
In his remarks, the Sokoto State Chief Judge, Muhammad Sai’du Sifawa, commended the Sokoto branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) for organising the Law Week event.
Justice Sifawa noted that the week-long celebration offers a platform for legal practitioners to interact, exchange ideas, and advance the administration of justice in the state. He encouraged members of the association to reflect on the achievements of the past year and strategise for the overall advancement of the legal profession.
Justice Sifawa also lauded the state government for always upholding the rule of law and maintaining the independence of the judiciary without undue interference.
Addressing the gathering, Barrister Muhammad Nuhu, the Chairman of the NBA Sokoto State Branch, stated the significance of the annual event in facilitating discourse and knowledge-sharing among legal professionals.
Nuhu described the chosen theme, “Professionalism and Nation Building,” as timely, emphasising the crucial role lawyers play in national development. He commended the state Chief Judge for his efforts in revitalising the judicial system, including infrastructural development and the appointment of judicial officers.
Nuhu pledged the association’s unwavering support to the state government and the chief judge in achieving their objectives.
The highlight of the event was a presentation on “Professional Discipline as Panacea to Nation Building in Nigeria,” delivered by Professor Abubakar Matazu, the Dean of the Faculty of Law at Usmanu Danfodiyo University.
