During a security meeting on Monday, the US Africa Command, AFRICOM, head General Michael Langley and the Somali defense minister Abdikadir Mohamed Nur discussed the fight against terrorism.

U.S representative Larry Andre and the security adviser for the Somali prime minister also attended the discussion, which took place in the U.S embassy in Mogadishu.

The Africom commander and Mohamed Nur, according to Nur, “expressed our joint commitment in increasing the ability and capacities of the SNAF (Somali national armed forces) and fighting al-Shabab.”

“The FGS [federal government of Somali] is appreciative of the role of Africom in enhancing peace and security in the region,” he tweeted.

As Somalia takes full responsibility for safeguarding the Somali people from extremist violence and extortion, the US embassy tweeted images of Gen. Langley’s visit to Mogadishu and stated that Washington provides “security support that strengthens Somali and AU [African Union] partners.”

The campaign against al-Shabab, which has stepped up its attacks around the nation this year, will intensify under the new Somali government’s pledge.
