The Somalia Federal Government has said a military operation on its borders managed to kill at least 200 al-Shahab terrorists.
The government said, on Sunday, that the militants, and several of their top officials, were killed at their base in Central Somalia in targeted US drone strikes.
Somalian army also managed to thwart several terrorist explosions.
The government in Somalia has stepped up its operations against al-Shabab in the country’s central and southern regions. Yet, much of the terrorist group’s control is still concentrated in rural areas where they ambushed military forces.
Official government statements indicated the airstrikes targeted Hariri Gubadle, a settlement near Wabho Township in the Galgaduud region, about 300 kilometres north of Mogadishu’s capital. In addition, the attacked Al-Shabaab base is located 20 kilometres east of Wabho Township.
US military forces and the Somali National Army collaborated on the raid.
“More than 200 Al-Shabaab militants and officials have been killed by the airstrikes,” it said without naming the fatalities or their ranks within the jihadist group.
It also did not mention the exact date of the attack.
As of this writing, no reaction has been released by the Al-Qaeda-linked group.
The operation comes at a time when US military advisors are proposing to President Biden to restore some troops in Somalia to improve training and coordination with local forces.
The Somali government said it was gathering intelligence on the deadly incident.
The al-Shabaab terrorist organization is affiliated with al Qaeda and has carried out numerous terrorist attacks in Africa in which hundreds of people have been killed.
The terrorist group has repeatedly attacked government troops and African Union peacekeepers in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, as well as carried out several brutal operations in other parts of Africa.
Somalia has been fighting against the al-Shabaab group since its founding in 2004.
