Khadija Mohamed Diriye, the longest-serving woman in Somali politics, has passed away after a brief illness. Diriye, who spent nearly three decades in the male-dominated field of politics, was serving as the Minister for Women and Human Rights Development at the time of her death in Djibouti on Wednesday afternoon.
Deputy Information Minister Abdirahman Yusuf al-Adalah disclosed that Minister Khadija was admitted to the hospital while attending a conference with government officials in Djibouti, where she subsequently underwent surgery.
The Somali government has announced its intention to issue an official statement, but numerous officials have already expressed condolences on their social media platforms.
Information Minister Daud Aweis shared his condolences, stating, “I extend my heartfelt condolences to the Somali people and the family of the late Minister of Women and Human Rights, Khadija Mohamed Diriye. Her passing in Djibouti is a significant loss. May Allah grant her mercy.”
