Somalia has officially taken its place on the United Nations Security Council after 54years, having previously been elected to a non-permanent seat for 2025-2026 term, which begins today.
There are 10 rotating non-permanent members on the council, along with the five permanent members – the US, the UK, France, China and Russia.
Somalia‘s Ambassador to the United Nations, Abuukar Daahir Cismaan (commonly known as Abuukar Baalle), issued a brief statement, declaring that they are committed to upholding the United Nations Charter, and are dedicated to maintaining international peace and security.
Somalia’s accession to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) as a non-permanent member for the 2025-2026 term is a momentous development, granting the country a more prominent voice in global peace and security deliberations.
As a member of the UNSC, Somalia will be afforded the opportunity to contribute to discussions on international conflicts, humanitarian crises, and the preservation of global peace. This position enables Somalia to actively participate in shaping international responses to pressing issues affecting the global community.
Somalia’s membership is expected to reinforce Africa’s representation in global governance, as the Security Council designates a number of seats specifically for the African continent. Somalia is well-positioned to advocate for matters of concern to Africa, including conflicts in the Horn of Africa and broader regional security challenges.
This new role will also elevate Somalia’s diplomatic standing on the world stage, underscoring its enhanced capacity to engage in global discussions. Somalia’s involvement in the Security Council signals its aspiration to become a pivotal actor in addressing international issues, particularly those tied to security, counterterrorism, and regional stability.
As a member, Somalia will play a part in influencing international policies on peacekeeping, counterterrorism, and conflict resolution.
Furthermore, the nation may seek increased international support to address persistent security challenges, including terrorism and instability within its region. This historic achievement reflects Somalia’s growing role in global diplomacy.
