Some Major Roads Unpassable, Durban Residents Loot Shoprite Truck (News Central TV)

A footage of lawlessness at the M19 and Umgeni Road Interchange in Durban, shows dozens of desperate residents descending upon a stationary Shoprite Truck, carting away its content.

The looting of the cargo for everything on board, in broad day comes on the heels of devastation of flooding in KwaZulu-Natal which claimed 443 lives last week and over R10 billion’s worth of damage estimated across the province.

The eThekwini Municipality has been badly affected, and this recent bout of extreme weather goes down as one of the worst natural disasters to ever hit South Africa.

The Government has declared a state of disaster for the region, freeing up a war chest of disaster relief funds of about 1 Billion Rand

There are concerns that the funds released by government may be misappropriated by politicians. Officials have been warned by pressure groups against using this tragedy to enrich themselves.

Frustrations are already rife in some parts of the province. KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala has had to defend himself against accusations of favouritism, after he was adjudged to have sourced a municipal water delivery for his own home. The ANC member, however, disapproved these assertion.
