After nearly three decades of service, Yoweri Museveni’s eldest son has announced that he will be leaving the army this year.

This was announced by Muhoozi Kainerugaba on his official Twitter handle.

“I will be retiring from the UPDF this year,” he tweeted.

When he was in charge of the land troops in March of last year, he made a comparable Twitter announcement. However, the army claimed that it had not actually received Kainerugaba’s request for retirement.

Days prior to making his most recent retirement announcement, he removed a tweet in which he declared his intention to run for president in 2026.

The tweeting general has made no secret of his desire to succeed his 78-year-old father, who has been president of Uganda since 1986, in the top position. The Ugandan law does not allow serving soldiers to participate in politics.
