South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged the G20 to continue advocating for diplomatic solutions to global conflicts. Speaking at the start of the G20 foreign ministers’ meeting in Johannesburg, he highlighted the importance of inclusive dialogue as the most reliable way to achieve sustainable peace.
Ramaphosa shared South Africa’s experience of peaceful conflict resolution and stressed the need for reform in the UN Security Council, making it more representative of the current global situation. He pointed out the significant human cost of ongoing conflicts, including those in Ukraine, Sudan, Gaza, and others.

In his address, the president welcomed the recent ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, viewing it as an essential step toward alleviating the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. He also emphasised the role of the G20 in promoting global peace and addressing pressing issues like disaster resilience, debt sustainability, and climate change.
Ramaphosa’s leadership in the G20 presidency marks the first time an African nation holds the position, underscoring Africa’s growing influence in global economic and political discussions.
