Clive Ramathibela Smith, Business and Market Analyst, Hectare Capital and Partners.

As much as R654 million worth of South Africa citrus, already on the way to Europe may be destroyed. This is because of a new cold-treatment regulation for citrus fruits that is set to kick in on July 14th. Last month the EU’s standing committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed voted in a new requirement that will force Southern African countries to implement extreme cold treatment to tackle the false codling moth, a pest which feeds on everything from avocados to maize. South Africa has initiated its first ever World Trade Organisation dispute case to challenge what could potentially be a sector killing decision by the European Union.

On Business Edge’s Tuesday August 2nd 2022 we had Clive Ramathibela Smith, Business and Market Analyst, Hectare Capital and Partners join us from Johannesburg, South Africa.

He said that the European Union changed the rules and enforced it’s implementation in a matter of days. This is contrary to earlier agreement and standards with South Africa, which it has been keeping up with. Let’s listen to his interview.https://youtu.be/LvxYkTXP-7w
