According to a WTO spokeswoman, South Africa has filed a WTO dispute complaint against the European Union over restrictions placed on the import of citrus fruit from that country.
The WTO members were informed of the nation’s request for dispute discussions with the EU on Friday, the official stated.
The WTO statement stated that South Africa is contesting recently passed modifications to EU phytosanitary rules for imports of oranges and other citrus products connected to the insect Thaumatotibia leucotreta, or false codling moth.
The General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (1994) and the Agreement on the Application of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures of the World Trade Organization, according to South Africa, appear to be at odds with a number of its articles.
