The 58 members of parliament (MPs) from Jacob Zuma‘s uMkhonto weSizwe, MK party have completed their oaths at the National Assembly, which happened ten days following the official ceremony.
Despite their ongoing dispute over the election results, they have opted to join the opposition as a broad national unity government is currently being organised.
The Opponents of President Ramaphosa, including Duduzile Zuma, the daughter of former President Jacob Zuma, and the former judge John Hlophe, have now assumed their positions. Even though the MK party aims to eliminate the Constitution, its MPs have pledged to uphold it. John Hlophe, who is now the opposition leader, stressed, “We are not hooligans.”
It is anticipated that the MK party will form an alliance with Julius Malema’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), which would total 100 seats.
This is relatively small compared to the government coalition that is being established, which holds over two-thirds of the 400 seats. However, even a week after President Cyril Ramaphosa’s inauguration, the coalition has not yet formed a government, indicating potential instability that the opposition hopes will result in a swift collapse.
