South African Police, The Hawks, have arrested Absa specialist engineer Xolela Masebeni, who is accused of fraudulently transferring R103m into six different bank accounts over the course of four months.
The money is alleged to have been transferred between September and December 2021 by Absa engineer Xolela Masebeni.
Capt. Ndivhuwo Mulamu, a Hawks spokesperson, said the bank reported the matter to the authorities after an internal investigation.
On Wednesday, January 19, Masebeni was traced and arrested in Queenstown in the Eastern Cape, she said.
The following day, he was charged with theft and appeared in the Komani (Queenstown) magistrate’s court.
He was remanded in custody pending further investigation.
Mulamu said that the matter has been transferred to the Palm Ridge specialised commercial crimes court and is scheduled to appear on January 27 to apply for a legal representative and bail.
Additional arrests and additional charges have not been ruled out by the Hawks.
