South Africa’s Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has sent a strong message to over 2,700 newly trained police constables, urging them to maintain integrity and avoid corruption.
The recruits, who have just finished their training, will help support police stations across the country during the busy festive season.
Speaking at the SAPS Academy in Tshwane, Mchunu discussed the challenges of policing and assured the new officers that the government is committed to supporting them.
“We understand that the work ahead will not be easy. Policing is a demanding profession and your well-being is important to us while you do your work,” he said.
The minister also promised that efforts are being made to ensure the recruits have the right tools, resources, and a good working environment to do their jobs properly.
Mchunu took the chance to highlight the importance of ethical behaviour, recognising that a few corrupt officers have damaged the reputation of the South African Police Service (SAPS).
“Do not be tempted to do anything wrong. Make an effort all the time even in the face of temptation to do what is right.
The minister made it clear that corruption would not be tolerated within the force.
“Let me be clear, there’s no room for corruption within the South African Police Service,” he stated.
