There is apprehension in South Africa as COVID-19 keeps raging in the country.
Barely nine days since it announced its 900,000 mark, South Africa has surpassed the 1 million mark amid heightening pressure on the nation’s health system.
The health ministry says the pressure is huge, as the first wave was not as demanding as this.
South Africa’s fearsome mark has come after a new variant was pinpointed to be the cause of new infections.
Countries have since closed borders on South Africa amid the new problems.
Africa’s worst-hit country, the rainbow nation is not getting any more colourful as citizens are waiting to see the back of the raging pandemic that has taken at least 26,000 lives in the country.
While it took two weeks for South Africa to hit the 900,000 mark from 800,000 mark, it has taken just 9 days to hit the 1 million mark.
The country has warned citizens to apply the none-pharmaceutical interventions as the system may not be adequate for the pressure on it.
Stricter measures are being considered by the country, with possible lockdown being discussed.
“Today, we have breached one million cumulative cases of COVID-19 in South Africa, with a cumulative total of 1,004,413 cases reported,” the ministry said in a statement late Sunday.
