South African authorities have asked Twitter to remove a video that allegedly incites violence against those who will not participate in protest marches scheduled for March 20.
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) opposition party is organizing nationwide marches to oppose the country’s power crisis and has called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to resign.
According to the Film and Publication Board (FPB), the video cautions that any student wearing school uniform during the demonstrations, as well as teachers and police officers, will be beaten up.
According to the report, the footage was posted by a person claiming to be an EFF member.
“Internally, the FPB shall monitor the take-down by Twitter to ensure that no further dissemination or distribution by the public occurs,” the board stated.
The general public has been advised not to share, re-post, or distribute the aforementioned video, and violators may face prosecution for disseminating or distributing prohibited material.
As the Julius Malema-led EFF party threatened to “shut down” the entire country on Monday, police have said they will be on high alert to prevent any violence.
Mr Malema maintains that the protests are not illegal and has warned that anyone who tries to stop them will “meet their maker,” according to News24.
