South Africa Urges Ceasefire in Lebanon to Prevent Widespread Conflict

South Africa has called for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon, where recent Israeli airstrikes have killed hundreds and displaced thousands of civilians.

Pretoria expressed concern over the escalating violence, particularly highlighting the recent assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and other figures in Lebanon.

“The scale of injuries caused by Israel’s indiscriminate bombings is deeply troubling and requires strong condemnation from the international community,” South Africa’s foreign ministry said in a statement.

‘‘Such attacks on civilians constitute a grave violation of international human rights and humanitarian law,’’ it added, stressing that these actions are escalating tensions in the already volatile Middle East and undermining international peace efforts.

The ministry reiterated South Africa’s solidarity with Lebanon during this crisis, condemning the ongoing attacks and reaffirming its support. South Africa also called for accountability for the “premeditated crimes” in Lebanon through a transparent international investigation.

Pretoria, which last year took Israel to the International Court of Justice over alleged acts of genocide in Gaza, urged for adherence to international law and an immediate ceasefire to prevent a major regional military conflict with devastating consequences for all involved.
