South African Football Association (SAFA) president Danny Jordaan has been taken into custody after being charged with fraud and theft of R1.3 million.
According to National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane, he is expected to appear before a magistrate court in Palm Ridge on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, Jordaan filed legal documents in the Johannesburg high court to prevent his arrest and prosecution. In his affidavit, Jordaan stated that a person named “Captain Magano” communicated the planned arrest to his attorney, Victor Nkwashu, on November 7.
“He told my attorney that he intended to arrest both Mr. Hluyo and me based on the investigation he was conducting, for which he had obtained arrest warrants, and that he wanted to arrange for us to be taken in on November 13, 2024.”
Gronie Hlunyo, Safa’s CFO, is Jordaan’s co-accused in this case. The allegations involve the two misappropriating R1.3 million from Safa without proper authorisation.
Hawks spokesperson, Colonel Katlego Mogale, stated that warrants for the arrests of Jordaan, Hlunyo, and a 46-year-old businessman were issued on Wednesday morning.
“The accusations allege that between 2014 and 2018, the president of Safa misused the organisation’s assets for his personal benefit, which included hiring a private security company for his personal safety and a Public Relations firm without the approval of the SAFA Board.”
Mogale indicated that a serious commercial crime investigation, which was investigating these claims, executed search and seizure warrants at the Safa offices on March 8, 2024. Various electronic devices and files were confiscated, culminating in the arrests.
