South African Music Awards 2022: All The Winners

The 28th South African Music Awards, SAMA, took place at Sun City on Sunday August 28, 2022.

One of this year’s top nominee, Zakes Bantwini, won two of the seven categories he was nominated in. The singer and record producer won awards for Highest Radio Airplay Composers and Best Collaboration for his hit “Osama” featuring Kasango.

In his acceptance speech, the 42-year-old said, “This is the first time that I’m winning the SAMA in my career. It’s been 16 years doing this thing.” “It goes to show that dreams delayed are not dreams denied.”

DJ & producer Chymamusique took home Album of the Year and Best Dance Album for ‘Musique’ and also won Male Artist of the Year.

Msaki won a brace for Female Artist of the Year and Best Adult Contemporary Album for ‘Platinumb Heart Open’.

Haksul Muziq was voted SAMPRA Artist of the Year by the members of the public.

Record of the Year award went to Musa Keys for ‘Vula Mlomo’, while Makhadzi took home the Music Video of the Year award for ‘Ghanama’.

Kabza De Small and DJ Maphorisa collaboration “Abalele” was named the Most Streamed Song Of The Year.

SAMA28 also saw some heavyweights pay tribute to hip hop legend Rikhado ‘Riky Rick’ Makhado who passed away on February 23, 2022. The performance was titled “Revolution of Hip Hop” and featured Stogie T, A-Reece, Phantom Steeze, Venom, Themba, Raspy, Buzzi Lee and Shishiliza who performed some of Riky Rick’s hits including “Sidlukotini”, “Boss Zonke”, “Stay Shining,” “Family Values” and “Sondela”.

Established in 1995, the annual event celebrates performances in South Africa’s music industry and features live performances by a selection of nominees. 30 awards will be handed out at this year’s ceremony.
