South African Parliament Convenes Over Impeachment Vote Against Ramaphosa (News Central TV)

South Africa’s parliament is set to its most crucial business of the year on Tuesday on whether or not President Cyril Ramaphosa should face impeachment.

After a delay of a week, all 400 members of the National Assembly are set to congregate in Cape Town for the all-important vote.

President Cyril Ramaphosa will be fighting for political survival this week, both in Parliament and from within his own party, the African National Congress(ANC)

President Ramaphosa has challenged the report and this prompted Tuesday’s debate in the country’s top court, the African Transformation Movement (ATM) has failed in a second push for a secret ballot.

The 230-member caucus of the ANC face a potential backlash from the party cadre and members if they reject the Section 89 independent panel report.

The Section 89 report suggests that the president may have breached the Constitution related to the theft of foreign currency from his farm Phala Phala.

Already, majority of opposition parties have indicated vote in favour report adoption, and for the findings to be sent to an impeachment committee.

For the simple majority required to make it work, several ANC lawmakers must step out of line.

The ATM made a second attempt to push for a secret vote, arguing it wants to spare ANC members retribution for breaking ranks. The impeachment process will stop if the report is not adopted.
