During a failed cash theft on Thursday, South African police shot and killed nine robbery suspects.

A police tactical reaction squad found the group at a house in the suburb of Sebokeng, which is south of Johannesburg.

The suspects were en route to attack a vehicle carrying money when police launched the raid.

Athlenda Mathe, a police spokesperson, reported that “a shooting ensued.” Eight of the suspects were pronounced dead at the scene in total, and the ninth suspect passed away in the hospital.

Three other people were hurt and were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The organisation was thought to be responsible for an increase in cases of cash heists on armoured security trucks in the Gauteng region of Johannesburg and its environs.

According to Mathe, at the scene, six firearms, explosives “ready to be detonated,” and four vehicles and other items were recovered.

In South Africa, there have been reports of cases where thieves target automobiles carrying cash.

Two witnesses were fired at randomly earlier this week as they were caught up in a heist in Benoni, east of Johannesburg with one of them injured in the process.
