Details have emerged that South African singer and actress, Kelly Khumalo ordered the assassination of former Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa, the Pretoria High Court heard on Wednesday, January 24.
Lead investigator Brigadier Bongani Gininda revealed to the court that two of the five accused assassins on trial made sworn confession statements to the police, alleging that the late football star’s ex-girlfriend and mother of his child, masterminded the hit on him.
Meanwhile, the other two suspects were linked via mobile phone evidence.
Brig. Gininda revealed that evidence found on Kelly Khumalo’s phone indicates communication with the two other suspects before and after Meyiwa‘s death on October 26, 2014.
This information comes after the court heard days ago, that Meyiwa’s death that fateful Sunday, October 26, 2014, was a hit, and not a robbery incident as initially believed.
“The victim was murdered as a contractual assassination or hit, rather than robbery gone wrong,” the lead investigator stated.
Meyiwa was shot and killed in what was believed to be a botched robbery at Khumalo’s house in Vosloorus, South Africa where he had gone to visit her mother.
The alleged hitmen entered the house, shooting the 27-year-old Orlando Pirates goalkeeper.
Despite the revelations, Khumalo is yet to be charged, as the court says investigations are still ongoing.
The five suspects have pleaded not guilty to all charges against them, including murder, robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and conspiracy to commit murder, among others.
Lawyers in defense of the accused have prayed the court to dismiss the admitted confession, stating that the suspects were compelled to make the utterances.
