Deputy Minister Mourns Passing of Police Committee Chairperson

Deputy Minister of Police in South Africa, Cassel Charlie Mathale, has expressed his sadness at the passing of Tina Joemat-Pettersson, the chairperson of the police portfolio committee. Joemat-Pettersson, 59, passed away at her home in Cape Town on Monday. She was a prominent member of the ANC’s National Executive Committee and National Working Committee.

In addition to her role as chairperson of the police portfolio committee, Joemat-Pettersson had previously served as the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries from 2009 to 2014, and later as the Minister of Energy from 2014 to 2017.

Mathale described Joemat-Pettersson as a committed leader, a veteran of the liberation movement, and a passionate legislator. He stated that her dedication and service to the African National Congress and South Africa were commendable.

Furthermore, Mathale acknowledged Joemat-Pettersson’s efforts towards achieving the goals of the Freedom Charter, which forms the foundation of the Constitution, human rights, and democracy in South Africa. He highlighted her commitment to changing the course of the nation’s politics.

Mathale also expressed his personal experience of working closely with Joemat-Pettersson when she chaired the police portfolio committee. He admired her gentle yet unwavering commitment to creating a better future for all.

He noted that her dedication, passion, and drive to establish a secure and safe environment for everyone were evident in all their interactions within the committee and study group. Mathale acknowledged her consistent support for initiatives aimed at combating crime. He emphasized her hard work, dedication, passion, and love for her family, colleagues, and the communities she served.

Mathale extended his gratitude to Joemat-Pettersson’s family for sharing their beloved mother, sister, and daughter with the people of South Africa. He recognised that their loss was a loss for the entire nation.
