Former speaker of South Africa’s National Assembly Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula arrived at the Lyttelton Police Station in Centurion early on Thursday morning to hand herself over to officials from the Investigating Directorate.

Mapisa-Nqakula, who resigned late on Wednesday, has delayed her arrest for weeks now, but will finally appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on charges of corruption.

She is expected to apply for bail. The National Prosecuting Authority has indicated that it will not oppose bail.

Meanwhile, acting Speaker of the National Assembly, Lechesa Tsenoli thanked Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula for her dedication as a member of Parliament over the last three decades.  Mapisa-Nqakula is the first National Assembly Speaker to resign from office.
