South Sudan Prepares for School Reopening Following Heatwave Relief

South Sudan’s government announces the resumption of all schools next week after a period of closure due to an extreme heatwave, with temperatures surpassing 40°C.

People are relieved that the rainy season will begin soon, however, the toll of last week’s scorching temperatures has been significant, with authorities confirming at least 15 fatalities attributed to the excessive heat.

With students set to return, cautionary measures are urged, particularly by educators. Playground activities are advised to be scheduled during the cooler morning hours, preferably indoors.

Furthermore, recommendations include ensuring classroom ventilation, providing adequate water supplies for students during school hours, and vigilant monitoring for signs of heat-related ailments, especially among young learners. Prompt medical attention is advised in cases of heat exhaustion or heatstroke.

Furthermore, the ministries of general education, health, and environment pledge ongoing vigilance, closely monitoring weather conditions and providing timely advisories to the public.
