South Sudan Sacks Finance Minister

President Salva Kiir of South Sudan has sacked the country’s finance minister, Salvatore Garang Mabiordit.

Mabiordit, who was appointed in 2018, has been replaced with Diing Athian.

No reason was given for the changes.

Mabiordit is the eighth finance minister dismissed by Kiir since 2011.

In a separate decree, Kiir also fired Erjok Bullen, acting commissioner of the National Revenue Authority, and Chol Deng Thon Abel, head of the Nile Petroleum Corporation, or Nilepet, the country’s institution overseeing oil production.

Gue amd Abel were replaced with Africano Monday and Bol Ring Marwel respectively.

Civil servants have been complaining about the non-payment of salaries for months now.

The outgoing finance minister was appointed in March 2018 to “revive the country’s economy”.

He was recently quoted by local media as saying that there was no money for salaries because the ministry only gets revenue from the sale of oil – which had dropped.

There were no reasons given for the dismissal of the officials.
