Spain Legend Andrés Iniesta Set to Retire at 40

Andrés Iniesta, widely considered one of the greatest midfielders in football history, has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 40.

The Spanish legend will make his official announcement on October 8, marking the conclusion of a remarkable career that has lasted over two decades.

In a teaser video shared on his X page on Tuesday, Iniesta wrote, “Coming soon 8/10/24.”

Iniesta’s football journey began at Barcelona’s renowned La Masia academy, where he quickly stood out for his exceptional ball control, vision, and composure on the pitch.

His talent was evident from an early age, prompting then-Barcelona captain Pep Guardiola to famously tell Xavi, “You’re going to retire me. This lad [Iniesta] is going to retire us all.”

Throughout his career, Iniesta has been lauded for his incredible technical abilities. As FIFA.com said, “It is in this position that his direct style and quick feet can be used to full effect, with the ball seeming glued to his toes as he races into threatening positions.”

His former manager, Vicente del Bosque, praised Iniesta as “a complete footballer,” noting that he is capable of both attacking and defending, as well as creating and scoring goals.

Iniesta’s trophy cabinet reflects his extraordinary talent on the pitch. Over his 22-year career at Barcelona, he collected an impressive 35 trophies, including nine La Liga titles and four UEFA Champions League titles, making him the most decorated Spanish footballer in history.

On the international stage, Iniesta played a crucial role during Spain’s golden era. He was instrumental in securing victories at UEFA Euro 2008 and 2012, as well as the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

His winning goal in the 2010 World Cup final against the Netherlands remains a historic moment in football.

After leaving Barcelona in 2018, Iniesta continued to demonstrate his skills in Japan with Vissel Kobe, followed by a brief period with UAE Pro League club Emirates.

Throughout his career, Iniesta’s exceptional game intelligence and close ball control established him as one of the most talented midfielders in the history of football.
