British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has urged Parliament to fast-track the Football Governance Bill into English law amid renewed concerns over a potential breakaway European Super League.
Reports suggest that promoters A22 have approached UEFA and FIFA to seek recognition for a new competition, the Unify League, which would involve four leagues and 96 teams in total.
The move echoes the failed Super League proposal of 2021, launched by 12 European clubs, including six from the Premier League. That plan collapsed under widespread criticism from fans and football authorities.
A devoted Arsenal supporter, Starmer is determined to prevent any Premier League club from engaging in similar schemes. The Football Governance Bill aims to introduce an independent regulator for the top five tiers of English men’s football.
The Prime Minister’s spokesman said:
“On his watch, there will be no Super League-style breakaway. The strengthened Football Governance Bill will empower the regulator to block English clubs from joining breakaway competitions, considering factors such as sustainability, heritage, and fairness.”
Starmer stressed the urgency of passing the Bill to safeguard the integrity of English football and deliver vital reforms across the football pyramid.
