According to the police in South Africa, two men were shot dead in Johannesburg by unidentified gunmen, leaving one university student dead and another critically injured by stray bullets.
The two university students were hit by stray bullets when their bus passed the scene of the shooting. So far no arrests have been made by the police.
Following the incident, several images have been circulated on social media by bystanders. One of such image shows a man’s body hanging out of a car’s window.
According to Col Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, the police spokeswoman, the incident happened on Thursday afternoon and one student was receiving medical attention. She also mentioned that two men in the vehicle and one of the students were declared dead.
Reports of South Africa’s gun crimes have increased steadily over the past year with the authorities cracking down on crime. The University of Johannesburg declared that two of the victims were students of the institution.
According to statistics from the South African Police Services, there were 34 deaths from gun crimes in South Africa on average every day between July and September of last year.
The police told the press that investigations were ongoing to determine the motive and perpetrators of the shooting.
