El Bilal Toure scored a dramatic stoppage-time goal to secure a 1-0 victory for Stuttgart against Juventus on Tuesday, marking the Germans’ first win in this season’s revamped Champions League.
The Mali forward, on loan from Atalanta, found the net in the second minute of added time, just as Juve goalkeeper Mattia Perin believed he had salvaged a point for his team. Earlier in the match, Perin had showcased his skills by saving a penalty from Enzo Millot, which capped a remarkable performance in a rare start.
Stuttgart capitalised on Juventus being reduced to 10 men after Danilo received a red card for the foul that led to the penalty. Toure exhibited quick footwork inside the box before finishing past Perin, handing Juve their first defeat of the season and ending their perfect record in the competition.
With this victory, Stuttgart moved up to 16th place in the league with four points, while Juventus slipped out of the top eight, currently on six points, which are necessary for direct qualification to the knockout stage.
Juventus relied heavily on Perin, a former Italy international, who stepped in for the suspended Michele Di Gregorio. He kept the impressive Stuttgart side at bay for most of the match until Toure’s late strike.
Stuttgart dominated the game with 11 shots on target compared to just one for Juventus, and they could have easily been ahead by halftime. The defeat is a significant setback for Juve, who are already grappling with several injuries as they prepare to face Italian champions Inter Milan at the San Siro on Sunday.
Perin made several crucial saves, including a fingertip stop against Ermedin Demirovic’s low drive that hit the post in the 30th minute. He followed that up with a full-stretch save to deny Undav’s looping header just before half-time and thwarted another effort from Undav shortly after the break.
Despite Perin’s efforts to keep his team in the match, Toure’s late goal dashed hopes for Juventus and left the home crowd stunned after they had rallied around their goalkeeper’s heroics.
