Sudan’s top military leader, Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan, was unharmed in a drone strike during a military graduation event in the eastern part of the country, where five individuals lost their lives, as per the military’s announcement.

The military said in a statement that the attack by two drones took place in Gebeit, a town in eastern Sudan, after the ceremony was concluded.

Military chief Burhan, who was attending, was not hurt, according to Lt. Col. Hassan Ibrahim from the military spokesman’s office.

Sudan has been torn by war for more than a year between the military and the powerful paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces.

As Khartoum is the centre of conflict, the military and government leadership largely work from eastern Sudan, close to the Red Sea Coast.

The drone strike is the most recent in a series of similar attacks on military locations in the past few months, and it occurred nearest to Port Sudan.

The RSF has not taken responsibility for any of the attacks and did not provide a comment regarding Tuesday’s incident, which comes a day after the army-aligned foreign ministry conditionally accepted a U.S. invitation to talks in Switzerland in August.
