Sudan’s army has announced the recapture of the headquarters of the state broadcaster in Omdurman, a significant development in the 11-month civil war with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The RSF had seized control of the headquarters shortly after the outbreak of the conflict. The ongoing conflict in Sudan has forced eight million people to flee their homes, with warnings of worsening hunger.
Videos circulating on social media depict soldiers celebrating outside the state broadcaster in Omdurman, marking what the army termed a major victory.
Despite gaining control of the building last April, the RSF was unable to broadcast from it, as state television continued airing pro-army content from other locations across the country.
Since the conflict’s onset, the army and the RSF have vied for control over Khartoum and nearby cities. Despite the UN Security Council’s call for a ceasefire during Ramadan, intense fighting persists in various parts of the capital.
The conflict erupted last April following a disagreement between Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, head of the Sudan army, and RSF chief Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti), regarding an internationally supported plan for transitioning to civilian rule.
In addition to displacing millions, the conflict has left Khartoum devastated, led to a humanitarian crisis, and sparked ethnically motivated violence in Darfur, located in the west of the country. Numerous international efforts to broker a ceasefire have been unsuccessful.
