About 26 people have been killed and 19 others wounded in a clash in southern Sudan triggered by livestock theft in the town of Kadugli, the capital of South Kordofan.
The violence prompted authorities to launch an investigation, official SUNA news agency reported.
South Kordofan has been the scene of a deadly conflict since 2011 between government forces and rebels complaining of marginalisation under toppled president Omar al-Bashir.
The restive region lies near the border with South Sudan.
Sudan’s military leaders ousted Bashir in April last year following mass protests against his rule.
A transitional administration took power in August and has been pushing to forge peace deals with rebels from Sudan’s conflict-ridden regions including South Kordofan.
Tribal clashes are often reported in several of the country’s far-flung regions including the western region of Darfur.
This week, at least three people were killed in clashes between the Bani Amer and Nuba tribes in the eastern city of Kassala, near Sudan’s border with Eritrea.
Last week, fighting broke out in South Darfur killing at least 30 people.
