Authorities in Sudan have imposed a partial lockdown on capital city, Khartoum after a surge in COVID-19 cases, a government statement on Wednesday confirmed.
The government also banned people from coming into the capital and extended the closure of schools, malls, markets and restaurants.
According to the government, Sudan is on the verge of a third wave of the virus and needs to take urgent steps to scuttle the unwanted development.
The country has recorded 30,000 cases with more than 20,000 of those being reported from the capital city Khartoum.
Sudan has received 800,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine and is expecting more vaccines in the coming weeks.
The partial lockdown threatens the much expected recovery of the Sudanese economy in 2021, after a very challenging economic year in 2020.
