Sudan launches first-ever satellite in partnership with China

Sudan’s first-ever satellite for conducting research in military, economic and space technology has been launched by China, the country’s ruling body said Tuesday.

General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who heads Sudan’s sovereign council, announced the launch of the satellite at a meeting of his top security officials held in Khartoum.

China’s state news agency, Xinhua, reported that the satellite was launched on Sunday from north China’s Shanxi Province.

“The satellite aims to develop research in space technology, acquire data as well as discover natural resources for the country’s military needs,” a statement issued by the council said.

The spokesman of the ruling body Mohamed al-Fakhi Sulaiman told reporters that “in a few months the satellite would be monitored from Sudan”.

“China launched the satellite as it is a partner in this project.”

Sudan has been involved in a national space programme for decades covering activities such as remote sensing and geoinformatics.

In 2013, the then Sudanese government of now-ousted leader Omar al-Bashir established the Institute of Space Research and Aerospace (ISRA) as part of an overall plan to develop space technologies.

Bashir was ousted by the army in April following a nationwide protest movement against his rule of three decades.

The protests were triggered by the economic crisis led by an acute shortage of foreign currency and high inflation.

Richard Branson apologises to South Africa for 'non-inclusive' tweet

British billionaire and Virgin founder Richard Branson apologised on Tuesday for posting a picture on Twitter he admitted “clearly lacked diversity” as he launched his new entrepreneurship development centre in South Africa.

On Monday he tweeted a picture of himself and eight others captioned “We aim to become the heart of entrepreneurship in Southern Africa”.

It featured no blacks in a country where they make up 80 per cent of the population.

That sparked outrage as racial tensions remain high and the majority black population is still economically marginalised 25 years after apartheid.

“Where did you find so many white people in South Africa?” one tweet said.

“I wish there were more BLACK entrepreneurs in this picture,” @NomsBomba said.

Following the flurry of angry and sarcastic tweets targeting the mogul, who runs a chain of gyms in South Africa and whose airline daily flies the London-Johannesburg route, Branson deleted the tweet and apologised.

“The Branson Centre of Entrepreneurship is for all South Africans, but yesterday’s choice of a photo to go with my tweet clearly lacked diversity. Apologies,” he said.

The centre serves as business development hub aimed at supporting entrepreneurs.

Singer Davido’s elder brother, Adewale Adeleke showed off the venue of the forthcoming wedding of him and his fiancee Adekani. The entertainment mogul with the Instagram name Chairmanhkn, took to his Instagram handle to show fans the beautiful venue for their wedding. Recall that he had earlier proposed to Adekani this year. This is happening just a few days after the naming ceremony of Davido and Chioma’s child’s dedication which held in London.

It is such a celebration period in the lives of the Adelekes. First, it was Davido and Chioma’s engagement. Then the birth of their son, Ifeanyi Adeleke. Now, the older Adeleke and his beautiful bride-to-be are set to exchange vows. From his post, the venue of the wedding will be at the famed Emirates Palace, Abu Dhabi, United Arabs Emirates.

The Adelekes always have the right degree of pomp in their events and celebrations. A wedding at the Emirates Palace costs about 120,000 dirhams, that is around 32,000 USD. During Davido’s son’s dedication, the singer donned the expensive Cartier Iced Out Glasses which is sold a whopping $12,000, approximately N4.5 million. A few days ago, the singer posted a picture of an expensive-looking Richard Mille watch and captioned it “it hurt my account but I had to do it..”. Luxury is a legacy for the Adeleke family. So, it was not surprising to see Adewale Adeleke settle for the expensive Emirates Palace for his wedding.

Though the date of the wedding is not known yet, we assume it is very close. Davido had also announced his own wedding to be in 2020. Nigerians surely cannot wait!

President Muhammadu Buhari has celebrated with his Nephew and long-time friend, Alhaji Mamman Daura, on his 80th birthday, congratulating him for many years of love and sacrifices for the nation, especially in his chosen career, journalism.

A statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, in Abuja, Buhari joined all family members and friends of the veteran journalist in celebrating the milestone.

President Buhari recalled, with delight, Daura’s remarkable brilliance from childhood at the Katsina Middle School and Government College which caught the attention of Northern Regional Government.

According to him, this feat earned him sponsorship for further studies in the United Kingdom in the 50’s and many years to follow, noting that the knowledge had, over time, only translated into more wisdom.

The President rejoiced with the renowned journalist and bibliophile, who worked with the civil service for a while before joining the New Nigerian newspapers, where he rose to be Editor and Managing Director, before venturing to the private sector as an entrepreneur.

He noted that Daura had inspired industrial growth in the north in furniture making, textile manufacturing, aluminum smelting, and other investments.

President Buhari assured Daura that his footprint on the development of the country, and quintessential attention to family values, would always be remembered and appreciated.

He also extolled him for the visionary role he played in the banking sector and management of companies and development institutions.

The President prayed that the almighty God will grant longer life to the elder statesman, and more strength to keep pursuing his number one passion of serving humanity, especially through philanthropy
