General Abdelfattah al-Burhan, the president of the Transitional Sovereign Council for Sudan, travelled to Juba, South Sudan, on Monday to meet with President Salva Kiir.

Al-Burhan was surrounded within the army headquarters in Khartoum by the rebel paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) during the months-long, deadly conflict in Sudan.

He was able to leave the city last week, and he has since been operating out of Port Sudan, which serves as the interim government’s seat.

Al-Burhan would talk about bilateral ties and methods to improve collaboration between Sudan and South Sudan, according to a statement from the Transitional Sovereign Council.

“The President of the Council will hold discussions with President Salva Kiir Mayardit, related to the course of bilateral relations and ways to advance and enhance the prospects for cooperation between the two countries, and issues of common interest in addition to developments in the situation in Sudan.”

The two nations have a long shared border as well as several economic and cultural connections.

Al-Burhan would also talk about the most recent changes to the Sudanese political situation, according to the announcement. A political crisis, an economic crisis, and a humanitarian crisis are all currently affecting the nation.

Senior government officials and Al-Burhan’s deputy, Malik Agar, together with Secretary-General of the Transitional Sovereign Council Mohamed Al-Ghali Ali, were present to see him leave at the Port Sudan Airport.

He was accompanied by the nation’s director of intelligence, Ahmed Ibrahim Mufaddal, and acting foreign minister Ali Al-Sadiq. One day is anticipated for the visit.
