Sudan state media has reported an attempted coup early on Tuesday without identifying the plotters.
According to reports, the Sudanese army thwarted a coup attempt, with tanks currently blocking a number of road.
The report indicates measures were being taken to contain a limited number of people involved in the coup attempt. The coup had allegedly involved an attempt to take control of state radio in Omdurman, across the river Nile from the capital Khartoum.
The army are said to have detained the officers who were planning the takeover.
The country witnessed a military coup in April 2019, triggered by massive popular protests that began in December 2018 amid a deep economic crisis and declining living standards. President Omar al-Bashir, who had ruled for 30 years, was removed from power and later imprisoned.
In August 2019, the head of the transitional military council of Sudan, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, took the oath of office as head of the country’s Sovereign Council.
Sudan’s new Prime Minister of Sudan, Abdullah Hamdok, was sworn in on 21 August 2019. The military and civilian authorities had agreed on a transitional period for large-scale political and economic reforms.
