Sudan has asked to purchase 1,000 megawatts of electricity from Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP).

EEP Corporate Planning Executive Officer, Andualem Sia said some African countries like South Sudan, Kenya, Djibouti including Sudan have expressed interest in obtaining electricity from Ethiopia.

He added that stakeholders from both countries are deliberating on Sudan’s interest to purchase 1,000 MW of electricity.

Last month, EEP experts went to Khartoum and Sudanese experts are expected in few days for the furtherance of talks with Ethiopian authorities.

As the construction of the 500-Kilowatt transmission line is nearing completion, members of the Kenyan parliament are expected next week in Ethiopia, to discuss the issue, Andualem stated.

Ethiopia has also built transmission infrastructure that could carry up to 2,000 megawatts to Tanzania and up to South Africa.

East Africa Power Policy with the support of the World Bank has concluded a study that enables Somaliland to get power from Ethiopia.

The executive officer said, South Sudan has stated its desire to purchase power, adding that a team of experts will soon travel to South Sudan to conduct a study on the construction of the power line.

The current demand for electricity from Ethiopian neighbouring countries shows their great expectations from the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
