Sudan Seeks UN, U.S. Mediation in Ethiopian Dam Controversy

Sudan is requesting a four-man mediation in talks over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) as the Ethiopian government finalises plans to fill the dam with water from River Nile.

Prime Minister, Abdalla Hamdok wrote officially to the United Nations, the United States, the European Union and the African Union, requesting their medication in the ongoing issue. The GERD is used to fuel the hydropower dam and the reservoir needs water for the second year.

Sudan’s move is backed by Egypt and talks stalled earlier in the year between the three countries. The discussions were spearheaded by the African Union at the time with no agreements reached.

Sudan and Egypt depend on the Nile for irrigation agriculture which helps to feed their people, in long spells of an absence of rainfall.

The countries involved are expected to reach an agreement if the UN, U.S., EU and AU agree to mediate.
