Sudan to Receive U.S Secretary of State Pompeo – Official

The Sudanese government will receive United States Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo in the coming days, a government official said on Sunday.

But the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, did not give details of Pompeo’s visit.

Sudan has been normalizing relations with the United States since the overthrow of former leader Omar al-Bashir in April 2019 but is still seeking removal from a list of countries the U.S. considers as state sponsors of terrorism.

Ending the terrorism listing is a top priority for Sudan’s transitional military-civilian ruling council and the government of technocrats that serves under it.

The listing dates to 1993 and makes Sudan technically ineligible for debt relief and financing from international lenders.

Pompeo will discuss ties between Israel and Sudan when he meets with Sudanese leaders during his trip to the Middle East this week, the State Department said Sunday.

The U.S Secretary of State is also set to visit Israel, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates this week, as the Trump administration seeks to capitalize on the momentum from the historic agreement between Israel and the U.A.E to establish diplomatic relations.
