In a cabinet reshuffle late Sunday, Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the leader of the Sudanese Sovereign Council, dismissed several cabinet members, including the foreign minister.
The Sudanese Sovereign Council stated that al-Burhan has chosen to relieve Foreign Minister Hussein Awad Ali of his duties and appointed Ali Youssef Ahmed to act.
Khalid Ali Aleisir has succeeded Graham Abdelkader as minister of information, while Omar Bakhit has succeeded Osama Hassan Mohamed Ahmed as Minister of Religious Affairs and Endowments.
This recent government reshuffle occurs amidst a continuous and deadly conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group (RSF), which has resulted in the deaths of over 20,000 individuals and displaced more than 10 million people since mid-April 2023, as reported by the UN.
The international community and the UN have heightened their appeals for a cessation of hostilities as the conflict threatens to plunge millions into famine due to food shortages impacting 13 of Sudan’s 18 states.
